The $1,00,000 Kentucky Oaks (G1) is the female counterpart to the Kentucky Derby, and will be run on Friday May 6, carded as the 11th race of a 12-race card at Churchill Downs. A field of 13 three-year-old fillies will contest this 1 1/8 mile main track trip carrying the assigned weight of 121 pounds.

The 5-2 favorite is Joyful Victory who is owned by Rick Porter's Fox Hill Farms and is trained by Larry Jones with Mike Smith getting the ride. She followed the Oaklawn path to the Oaks, winning both the Fantasy (G2) and Honeybee (G3) there. The co-second choices are Kathmanblu and Zazu. Kathmanblu won the Rachel Alexandra (G3) at the Fair Grounds last out, while Zazu was second in the Santa Anita Oaks (G1).

Joyful Victory's trainer Larry Jones said, "If we had a front-runner you'd have to break well, but we're going to be midpack anyway. There's a lot of speed in here, and there's going to be some behind us. Calvin Borel likes it down there, so we might be in the golden spot. She's one of those horses that just floats over the ground. I think you could run her over marbles and she wouldn't care."

Zazu's owner Dann Glick said, "She is improving by the day and you don't get this opportunity very often. When (R Heat Lightning) went out, we had to take a look at the race again. We're going to take a shot. I feel this filly has a lot of potential."

The Kentucky Oaks will be shown live during a special 1 hour telecast on VERSUS from 5-6 pm ET with the Oaks going to post at 5:45. Free past performances are available from Daily Racing Form and hereBRISnet.com (link is beside Plum Pretty).
