The Grade 2 $300,000 Fountain of Youth Stakes is the major local prep for the
Florida Derby and ultimately the Triple Crown. 8-1 shot Corinthian stalked
the early pace of 7-10 favorite First Samurai, and passed him in the stretch
to finish in front by a length in 1:49.00 for the 1 1/8 mile main track
feature. However, Corinthian did not keep a straight course through the
stretch, first bumping First Samurai into the inner rail, and then bearing out
which pushed First Samurai into the late-charging 10-1 shot Flashy Bull. As a
result, Gulfstream Park stewards disqualified Corinthian to third place,
awarding the victory to First Samurai and the second place money to Flashy
Bull. Corinthian's jockey Javier Castellano said, "He's a very hard horse to
ride. He came out a little bit at the end, but as soon as he came out, I
thought he was clear. In my mind, he's still a very immature horse, and he's
always been difficult in the gate. He was tired at the end."
