The $150,000 Pan American Handicap (G3) featured older horses going 1 1/2
miles on the turf. 5-2 second choice Silver Whistle stalked the early pace of
32-1 longshot Ramazutti through slow fractions of 48.48 and 1:38.42. On the
far turn Silver Whistle moved up alongside Ramazutti and wore him down inside
the 1/16 pole to prevail by a neck in a time of 2:24.35. 2-1 favorite Go
Deputy came on late to get up for third. Jockey Edgar Prado said, "It worked
out great. I was able to stay behind the speed and bide my time. So it worked
out beautiful because I was able to run down that other horse (Ramazutti) the
last part of it." Winning trainer Bill Mott added, "It took him all the way to
the wire to finally win one of these. I guess he needed the extra distance. He
had a nice trip inside. We knew he would be able to step up to this level of
competition."
