The $1 million Woodbine Mile (G1) for older horses going 1 mile on the E.P. Taylor Turf Course, is one of the Breeders' Cup Challenge "Win and You're In" races, with the winner earning a spot in the Breeders' Cup Mile field on October 26 at Santa Anita. 2007 Breeders' Cup Mile winner Kip Deville was sent off as the 1-2 favorite coming off a win in the Poker at Belmont. 4-year-old filly Ventura, second in the CashCall Mile at Hollywood last out, was the 5-2 second choice in the field of eight over 13-1 Rahy's Attorney, fourth in the Nijinsky last time out and the main local hope.
Just Rushing and Kip Deville contested the pace down the backstretch getting fractions of 24.47 and 48.25 with Ice Bear and Rahy's Attorney giving chase. On the turn, Rahy's Attorney came out for running room and bid for the lead, opening up a 1 1/4 length lead on the favorite at the top of the lane, getting 3/4 in 1:11.93. Through the stretch, Kip Deville tired, while Ventura, who raced back in sixth early, came out wide for the drive and rallied well, but had too much ground to make up. Rahy's Attorney cruised under the line 1 1/4 lengths in front, completing the trip in 1:36.14 over the yielding turf course. It was another 1 3/4 lengths back to pacesetter Just Rushing third, while favorite Kip Deville tired late to finish fifth beaten 5 lengths.
