The Pennsylvania Derby (G2) at Philadelphia Park is the richest race in Pennsylvania, with its purse boosted to a record $1 million this year after being canceled last year due to the construction of the casino in the grandstand. Illinois Derby winner Cowtown Cat was the 7-2 favorite over West Virginia Derby winner Zanjero at 9-2 and the 2-horse entry of Cable Boy and Get Serious at 5-1.
Cable Boy was sent to the front first time past the stands by jockey Jose Velez and was loose on the lead through fractions of 23.04, 46.44, and 1:10.55 over the fast main track. 6-1 fourth choice Timber Reserve and jockey Javier Castellano sat second while 23-1 longshot Xchanger stalked the pace in third. The fast pace took its toll on Cable Boy who faded badly at the top of the stretch, allowing Timber Reserve to inherit the lead with 1 1/2 furlongs left. Luis Garcia aboard Xchanger put in a challenge but Timber Reserve held him off by a neck at the line in a stakes-record-equaling time of 1:47.67. It was 3 1/2 lengths back to late-running Zanjero in third, while favorite Cowtown Cat raced well off the pace early and showed no rally late, finishing eighth.
