The highlight race of the Saratoga meeting is the $1 million Shadwell Travers Stakes (G1), a 1 1/4 mile trip over the main track for 3-year-olds. Just 34,221 fans braved the chilly wet conditions on Saturday afternoon, as overnight rains rendered the main track sloppy and the turf course soft. A field of 7 went to post with Amsterdam winner Quality Road sent off as the 3-2 favorite over Belmont Stakes winner Summer Bird at 3-1 and Jim Dandy winner Kensei at 9-2.
Our Edge battled for the lead with Kensei through fractions of 23.19 and 46.88, before Kensei took over the lead approaching the far turn through 3/4 in 1:11.12. Entering the stretch, jockey Kent Desormeaux asked Summer Bird, who raced in third out wide throughout, to challenge for the lead, passing the tiring pacesetters through 1 mile in 1:36.61. Hold Me Back, last early, put in a strong rally late but was no match for Summer Bird who cruised under the line 3 1/2 lengths in front in a time of 2:02.83. It was another 1 1/2 lengths back to favorite Quality Road third.
Also on the card were the Ballerina Stakes (G1), Ballston Spa Handicap (G2), and Victory Ride Stakes (G3)
