The 137th edition of the Travers Stakes (G1) is the highlight of the 2006 Saratoga meeting, but with dark clouds and the possibility of rain, only 40,785 fans were on hand for the festivities. Just 6 three-year-old colts made the starting gate in this $1 million classic, but it proved to be a one-horse show as 2-5 favorite Bernardini easily shook off 5-2 favorite Bluegrass Cat entering the stretch off a slow pace of 48.17 and 1:36.83. Bernardini pulled away through the lane to win by 7 1/2 lengths in a time of 2:01.60 for the 1 1/4 mile trip over a fast track. Late-running 41-1 longest shot Dr. Pleasure was 6 1/4 lengths back of Bluegrass Cat in third.
