The Arlington Million (G1) was the world's first million-dollar race and still attracts quality runners to Chicago for this 1 1/4 mile turf event. A crowd of 29,979 came out to witness the 24th edition of the Million, featuring a field of 10 entrants with United Nations Stakes winner English Channel sent off as the 2-1 favorite over European invader Ace, the 7-2 second choice, and Manhattan Handicap winner Cacique at 4-1.
California-based 8-year-old The Tin Man and jockey Victor Espinoza set a slow pace on the front end through fractions of 24.75, 50.37, 1:15.18, and 1:38.64, while being tracked by Cacique the whole way. Through the stretch, Edgar Prado asked Cacique for his best but it wasn't enough, as The Tin Man fought him off in the last furlong to win by 1 length in 2:01.35. It was 1 1/4 lengths back to 14-1 Soldier Hollow in third, while favorite English Channel was fourth.
