Pleasant Strike set a pace of 24.97, 48.94, 1:14.64, an 1:39.61 while Fleeting Shadow and Lattice stalked him the whole way. Admiralofthefleet hugged the rail in fourth early on. With 1/4 mile left to run, Pleasant Strike tired badly as Red Giant, who was 5th early, came out wide and took over the lead. Red Giant pulled ahead to a 1 1/2 length advantage with a furlong to go. However, Shamdinan, who was near the back of the field early, came out widest of all into the stretch and closed with a rush to prevail by 1/2 a length in 2:04.02. It was a long 5 1/2 lengths back to Going Ballistic in third, and 1 3/4 lengths more to Admiralofthefleet in fourth who could not improve his position late.

The $400,000 Secretariat Stakes (G1) is also contested at the Million distance of 1 1/4 miles but is restricted to 3-year-olds. European import and Coral Eclipse 3rd place finisher Admiralofthefleet was the 9-5 favorite in the field of nine, over 3-1 second choice and Virginia Derby winner Red Giant, and 9-2 third choice Shamdinan, ninth in the Irish Derby in his last start.
