The $750,000 Whitney Handicap(G1) features the best older horses in the east meeting up at Saratoga Race Course. As expected, last year's Travers winner Flower Alley was the 3-2 favorite over Argentine-bred 9-5 Invasor, winner of two straight Grade 1 handicaps, the Pimlico Special and the Suburban.
20-1 shot Siphon City set a moderate pace of 47.21 and 1:11.38 while Flower Alley and Invasor sat in stalking position midpack. At the top of the stretch, the pace faded from contention as Invasor surged to the front. Through the stretch, late-running 7-1 Sun King came up to challenge but Invasor would not be denied, holding off the Nick Zito trainee by the slimmest of margins to win the 1 1/8 mile feature in 1:49.06. Flower Alley showed nothing late and finished seventh in the 9 horse field.
