The $700,000 Northern Dancer Breeders' Cup Turf (G2) features some of the best turf specialists in Canada and the Northeast contesting 1 1/2 miles over Woodbine's E.P. Taylor Turf Course. Last year's winner Sky Conqueror was back, this time obtaining the services of new jockey Edgar Prado as the 5-4 favorite in the field of eight. Gulfstream Park Breeders' Cup winner Jambalaya was the 5-2 second choice over California invader Obrigado at 3-1, third in the Charlie Whittingham last out.
16-1 French Beret set a slow pace of 25.45, 50.75, and 1:14.79 over the firm turf course while allowed an almost uncontested lead. 28-1 Last Answer tracked him in second while Prado kept Sky Conqueror back in sixth for the long backstretch trip. With half a mile to go, French Beret tired badly allowing Last Answer to take over the lead through a mile in 1:38.68 and 10f in 2:03.04, but Sky Conqueror was just hitting his best stride. Prado took him out to the middle of the course and set him down for the drive. Taking over the lead at the 1/8 pole, Sky Conqueror pulled away to win by 1 1/2 lengths in 2:27.45 over 12-1 Marsh Side, while Jambalaya finished third another 1/2 length back.
