Ablo winning the 2005 Prince of Wales Stakes over Autumn Snow

Sunday July 17 marked the 70th running of the Prince of Wales Stakes at Fort Erie, the second leg of Canada's Triple Crown. Queen's Plate winner Wild Desert was the heavy favorite and looked unbeatable on paper, but today was just not his day. Heavy rains earlier in the day left the track a sloppy mess which he just didn't seem to take hold of. Instead, 8-1 third choice Ablo, who was 4th in the Queen's Plate, broke on top and led the entire way. He was challenged most of the way by 16-1 longshot Autumn Snow and they duelled down to stretch with Ablo prevailing by a neck. Favorite Wild Desert toiled six lengths behind the leaders most of they way and finally rallied wide in the stretch to get up for third. Final time for the 1 3/16 mile race was 1:56.90.
