Just seven Canadian-bred 3-year-olds started in the second leg of the Canadian Triple Crown, the $500,000 Prince of Wales Stakes run at 1 3/16 miles at Fort Erie Racetrack. Queen's Plate winner Not Bourbon was the 11-10 favorite coming into the race off three straight wins: the Queenston, the Plate Trial, and the Queen's Plate. Withers Stakes winner Harlem Rocker, who was 4th in the Plate Trial last out, was the 6-5 second choice, over 11-1 third choice Deputiformer, fourth in the Plate in his last start. Although the track was muddy early in the card, warm weather and a stiff breeze dried the track to fast in time for the Prince of Wales.
Longshots Pewter and Pronger battled for the lead down the stretch the first time, getting the 1/4 in 24.09, before Pronger dropped back and Sebastian's Song moved up to join the pace battle up front. The pair got the 1/2 in 47.40 and 3/4 in 1:11.98, while favorite Not Bourbon stalked them out wide. On the far turn, pacesetter Pewter tired to an eventual last place finish, but Not Bourbon came up empty when asked by Jono Jones. Harlem Rocker, who relaxed in fifth early, came into the stretch 3 wide and took command at the 3/16 pole. East End Tap, last early, joined Harlem Rocker briefly at the 1/8 pole but was turned away by the big grey, as Harlem Rocker kicked clear to win by 1 1/4 lengths in 1:56.46 over the fast track. It was a long 3 3/4 lengths back to Pronger third, while favorite Not Bourbon tired badly through the lane to finish sixth.
