Also on Sunday was the $100,000 Astoria Stakes for juvenile fillies going 5 1/2 furlongs. Desire to Excel, the longest shot on the board, battled for the lead with She's Roughin It through a quick half in 45.73, then shot ahead at the top of the stretch and easily held off odds-on favorite Octave to win by 5 widening lengths in 1:04.33. She's Roughin It was third. Winning jockey Mike Smith said, " She had a great disposition. Everybody else was washing out and she didn't raise a hair. I was more nervous than she was." Trainer Kelly Breen added, "We gave her a month to develop and it looks like everything we did worked. She's pretty high on herself. We took a shot today and it worked. We'll probably look at some races at Saratoga for her."
