Rebel Rebel wins the 2006 Poker Handicap at Belmont Park

On Sunday, seven older horses went to the gate in the $100,000 Poker Handicap (G3) at 1 mile on the turf. 5-2 second choice Rebel Rebel raced wide and in fifth place behind the pacesetting T.D. Vance through a half in 46.57, then closed on the outside as the pace fell apart, took command at the 1/8 pole, and won going away by 2 1/4 lengths over late-running 2-1 favorite Remarkable News. It was 2 1/4 lengths more to 10-1 Vicarage in third. The running time was 1:33.34 over the firm Widener turf course.
