Last year's Canadian champion 2-year-old colt Edenwold had yet to live up to his promise from last year, but he got it all together on Sunday at Woodbine to win the $1 million Queen's Plate, the first race of the Canadian Triple Crown. This was the first time since 1977 that a juvenile champ won the Queen's Plate and it made trainer Josie Carroll the first woman trainer to win the race in its 147 year history.
Ridden by Emile Ramsammy, Edenwold broke from post one and chased a blistering pace set by Sterwins, before taking over on the rail around the far turn of the mile and one-quarter classic for Canadian-foaled three-year-olds. He then pulled away in the stretch to win by 3/4 of a length at odds of 16-1 in a final time of 2:05.30. Sterwins set all the fractions, :22.73, :45.98, and 1.11:28, while pressed the entire way but continued to fight to the wire for a resolute second place finish. Malakoff was close to the pace from the start and tried to make a move in the stretch but came up empty and had to settle for third.
