A crowd of 24,429 attended Pimlico on the Friday before the Preakness. The $500,000 Pimlico Special (G1), the highlight race on the card, saw the Argentine-bred 7-1 shot Invasor stalk the early pace of odds-on favorite Wanderin Boy through a half in a slow 47.48, then draw even with Wanderin Boy late in the stretch and finally dismiss him inside the last 50 yards to win by 1 1/4 length. The running time for the 1 3/16 mile even was 1:54.40 over the "fast" main track. West Virginia was third while Harlington finished fourth.
