The $200,000 Gotham Stakes (G3) is the local prep race for the Wood Memorial and ultimately the Kentucky Derby for New York based horses. Nine three-year-old Triple Crown hopefuls entered this 1 1/16-mile inner track feature, with a paid attendance of 4,148 on hand at Aqueduct. As expected, Summer Doldrums was the 11-10 favorite off his gate-to-wire win in the Whirlaway by 5 1/4 lengths last time out. Todd Pletcher shipped in Swale Stakes third place finisher Cowtown Cat from Florida, and he was the 5-2 second choice.

Wollaston Bay battled on the pace with Wafi City through fractions of 24.54 49.57, while Summer Doldrums tracked the pace in third on the outside, and Cowtown Cat tracked him in fourth on the inside. Turning for home, Wollaston Bay faded from contention, allowing Wafi City an uncontested lead into the stretch. Wafi City was 1 1/2 lengths clear at the 1/8 pole, but Cowtown Cat was gaining ground late. Cowtown Cat passed Summer Doldrums at the 3/16 pole and was all-out late to catch Wafi City inside the 1/8 pole and draw away by 2 1/2 lengths at the line, completing the trip in 1:44.75 over a track rated fast. Summer Doldrums also put in a late charge but finished third, a head back of Wafi City.
