The $300,000 Spinaway Stakes (G1) is the premier race at Saratoga for 2-year-old fillies, contested at 7 furlongs on the main track. Officially 59,187 fans were in attendance under sunny skies and temperatures in the low 80's, but that figure was artificially high due to the souvenir blanket giveaway. Teen Pauline, winner of her 5f debut last out by 4 1/2 lengths, was sent off as the 3-5 favorite in the field of 5 over 5-2 second choice Seasoned Warrior, a maiden winner in her second start, and 7-2 third choice and Schuylerville Stakes (G3) winner So Many Ways.
Jockey Julien Leparoux sent Teen Pauline to the lead exiting the chute and she set fractions of 22.29 and 45.13 while pressed by 13-1 Corail to her outside. On the turn, So Many Ways, who stalked the pacesetters in third early, moved up to take over the lead through 3/4 in 1:10.27. 22-1 longest shot Sweet Shirley Mae, last early, closed late but to no avail as So Many Ways cruised past the post 2 1/2 lengths ahead in 1:23.74 over the fast track. It was another 2 lengths back to favorite Teen Pauline third.
