There were two graded stakes run at Oaklawn Park on Saturday afternoon. Conditions were excellent atythe historic Hot Springs oval, with 20,983 on hand under sunny skies and temperatures in the mid 60's. The $125,000 Razorback Handicap (G3) features older horses going 1 1/16 miles as the major local prep for the Oaklawn Handicap. San Fernando (G2) winner Tapizar was sent off as the 11-10 favorite in the field of 6 off his 4th place finish in the Strub (G2), both at Santa Anita. In to challenge him included 6-5 second choice Alternation, winner of the Essex Handicap last out, and 4-1 third choice Win Willy, coming back from an 11 month break off his win in the 2011 Oaklawn Handicap (G2).
Alternation and Tapizar battled for the lead right out of the gate, clicking off fractions of 23.62, 47.13, and 1:11.88 while as many as 3 1/2 lengths in front of 20-1 It Happened Again stalking them third. Entering the stretch, Alternation opened up a 1 1/2 length lead, and held that advantage to the line, completing the distance in 1:43.50. It was a long 6 3/4 lengths back from Tapizar to 15-1 Color Me Blue third.
