The co-feature on Woodbine Mile day was the $500,000 Northern Dancer Turf Stakes (G1) for older horses going 1 1/2 miles on the E.P. Taylor Turf Course. A field of 8 went to post with Al Khali sent off as the lukewarm 3-1 choice off his fourth place finish in the Sword Dancer (G1), over 7-2 second choice and deefnding champion Wigmore Hall, 7th in the Arlington Million (G1) last out, and 4-1 third choice Scalo, third in the Sky Classic (G2).
Jockey Jesse Campbell sent 67-1 longest shot Celtic Conviction to the lead immediately and he set fractions of 24.85, 50.15, 1:14.83, and 1:39.80 over the good course while stalked by 6-1 Irish Mission. Entering the stretch, Irish Mission gained the lead through 1 1/4 miles in 2:04.54, but the pace battle took its toll on both. Favorite Al Khali, fifth early, moved up to take a short lead at the 1/8 pole but Wigmore Hall, 7th early, outfinished him in the final 1/16 to win by a neck in 2:28.28. It was another length back to 5-1 Forte Del Marmi third.
