The feature race on Saturday night at Evangeline Downs was the $125,000 Evangeline Mile Handicap. Conditions were ideal, with a dry fast track, firm turf, some clouds and temperatures in the 80's. After expected favorite and Louisiana Legends Classic winner Star Guitar failed to enter due to his retirement earlier in the week, a full field of 10 older horses contested this 1 mile trip around two turns of the Opelousas, Louisiana oval. Al Stall Jr. trainee Apart, winless since the 2011 William Donald Schaefer Handicap (G3) was sent off as the 4-5 favorite off a fifth place finish in the Alysheba (G2) at Churchill Downs followed by a sixth place finish in the Lone Star Handicap (G3) at Lone Star Park. In to challenge him included 7-1 second choice Heavy On Themister off his second place finish in the Louisiana Legends Classic, and 15-2 third choice Pirate Island, second in the Louisiana Legends Sprint last out after two allowance wins.
Jockey Tracy Hebert sent Heavy On Themister to the lead first time by and he set quick fractions of 23.08, 45.96, and 1:10.46 over the fast main track while pressed by Pirate Island to his outside and 8-1 Unitas to his inside. Favorite Apart was last early, seven lengths back under new jockey Gerard Melancon. The favorite unleashed his rally on the turn but Heavy On Themister was up to the task, holding him off after a brief duel by a neck in a time of 1:36.38, just 1/10 second off Ide Like a Double's track record set in this race in 2008. It was a long 5 1/2 lengths back to 10-1 Sweetsouthernmoon third.
