The $2 million UAE Derby (G2), sponsoed by the Al Naboodah Group, is the only age-restricted race on World Cup night, open only to northern hemisphere 3-year-olds and southern hemisphere 4-year-olds. It was meant to be the local prep for American Triple Crown contenders, however southern hemisphere 3-year-olds are recognized as 4-year-olds in the north and are not eligible for the Kentucky Derby. Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf winner Wrote was sent off as the 3-1 favorite in this 1900 meter (1 3/16 mile) event over 7-2 second choice Lucky Chappy, second in both the Kitten's Joy at Gulfstream and the El Camino Real Derby (G3) at Golden Gate, and 4-1 third choice Mickdaam, off his win in the local prep for this race, the Al Bastakiya (G3).

Jockey Kerrin McEvoy sent 10-1 Helmet to an uncontested lead first time by and he set slow fractions of 26.13, 50.54, and 1:15.19 over the fast Tapeta track, with 9-1 Daddy Long Legs stalking in second and 12-1 Maritimer third. Entering the stretch, Helmet tired allowing Daddy Long Legs to inherit the lead through a mile in 1:39.84. Aided by the slow early pace, Daddy Long Legs accelerated away to win by 1 3/4 lengths over 21-1 Yang Tse Kiang in 1:58.34. It was another 3/4 length back to favorite Wrote third.
