The first stakes race on Del Mar Debutante day was the $85,000 Harry F. Brubaker Stakes for older horses going 1 mile around 2 turns of the Polytrack. Kettle Corn was the 9-5 favorite in the field of 6 off third place finishes in the Hollywood Gold Cup (G1) and San Diego Handicap (G2). In to challenge him included 2-1 second choice John Scott, second in the San Diego, and 3-1 Midnight Interlude, fourth in the Wickerr last out.

9-1 Tres Borrachos set the early pace of 24.28, 48.70, and 1:12.64 while pressed by Midnight Interlude early. The lead pair tired into the stretch as John Scott, who stalked them in third early, moved up to take the lead through 7 furlongs in 1:24.51, and was all-out to hold off late-running favorite Kettle Corn by a neck in 1:36.52. It was another 1 1/4 lengths back to 5-1 Holladay Road third.
