The $250,000 Prioress Stakes (G2) at Belmont Park features 3-year-old fillies sprinting 6 furlongs on the main track. 6,689 were on hand on Independence Day with temperatures in the high 80's and a fast surface. Alienation was sent off as the 8-5 favorite in the field of 6 off an allowance win in her 2011 debut, after finishing 6th in the Oak Leaf (G1) at Hollywood last October. In to challenge her included 5-2 second choice Quantum Miss, winner of her last three starts, the Cicada (G3), Trevose, and Wonders Delight, and 3-1 third choice Roman Treasure, winner of the Miss Royal Stakes last out.
Roman Treasure and Quantum Miss battled for the early lead down the backstretch and around the turn through quick fractions of 21.78 and 44.55 while being stalked by favorite Alienation. At the top of the stretch, Alienation moved up to challenge and took over the lead at the 1/8 pole through 5f in 56.72. However, in the final furlong she tired, as 7-1 Her Smile, last early, closed with a rush to win by 1/2 a length over Pomeroys Pistol in 1:09.44 over the fast track. It was another 3 1/2 lengths back to Alienation third.
