Qualifier Profile: Meteoric

The 44th Running of the All American Futurity (G1) for two-year-old American Quarter Horses will be contested Labor Day, Monday, September 2. The race is the 10th event on the Labor Day card at Ruidoso Downs in New Mexico. Approximate post time for the All American is 5:45 Central (4:45 Mountain Time).


Qualifier Profiles

The All American Futurity will be telecast live on TVG at 5 p.m. Central time on Labor Day. Additional coverage of the one-hour special will be available on Fox Sports Net West 2, Rocky Mountain and Arizona. TVG Network is available on Dish Network - Channel 405 and in some select cable markets. "America's Horse," AQHA's weekly television show on Outdoor Life Network, will have a special one-hour program on Tuesday, September 3, dedicated to the All American Futurity at 7 p.m. Central time, repeating at 10 p.m. Central (8 p.m. Pacific). OLN is available in most cable markets and on Dish Network 151 / DIRECTV 608.

With the excitement of the All American Futurity, AQHA is offering people (18 and older) the opportunity to play the All American Daily Double. It could be worth $500 simply by handicapping two of American Quarter Horse racing's richest and most prestigious races - the $2-million All American Futurity and the All American Derby (G1).

OBJECT
Pick three horses in both the All American Derby (G1) and the All American Futurity (G1) and earn points based on how your horses perform.

SCORING
Points will be awarded based on how your selections perform in each of the two contest races. Points will be awarded according to the following schedule: 1st - 25 points, 2nd - 20 points, 3rd - 15 points, 4th - 10 points, 5th - 5 points, 6th - 4 points, 7th - 3 points, 8th - 2 points, 9th - 1 point and 10th - 0 points. Scratched horses will earn 5 points each. The order that the horses are selected does not matter for scoring purposes. Only one entry is allowed per person and per e-mail address. Entrants must be 18 years old or older to play, and all entries must be received by 1 p.m. CDT on Sunday, September 1. RACE RECORD:

  • Six wins in six races, earnings of $64,986.
  • Won All American trial heat 18 by two lengths from Lazy E Futurity (RG2) winner Hail Corona.
  • Recorded the sixth-fastest qualifying time of :21.262 and a lifetime-best 103 speed index.
  • Began his career in the Northwest region, winning the April 21 Pot O'Gold Futurity (G3) at Sun Downs and the May 25 Bitterroot Futurity (RG2) at Les Bois Park.

CONNECTIONS:

  • A California-based partnership consisting of Anaheim physician James Streelman and dairy farmers Denny Boer of Jerome, Idaho, and Doug Benson of Hereford, Texas, Dutch Masters III also campaigns fifth-fastest qualifier Flys R Streakin. The partnership was voted AQHA Champion Owner last year for the first time since the award was established in 1985. Their 2001 stakes winners included Grade 1 winner Sassy Smith, Far West Futurity (RG3) winner Fancy A Shag and Idaho Cup Derby (RG3) winner Paladium. Started in 1991, Dutch Masters III has raced 15 stakes winners and the earners of more than $4.8 million. The partnership acquired Flys R Streakin for $31,000 at last year's Ruidoso Yearling Sale.
  • Located in the central Oregon town of Terrebonne, Painted Rock Ranch is operated by trainer Lin Melton's son Scott and his wife, Angela. Painted Rock Ranch has 18 winners from 21 starters and the earners of $479,062. Their homebred stakes winners include Fancy A Shag, Easy Misdemeanor and Paladium.
  • Trainer Lin Melton has long been one of the leading trainers in the Northwest region. Since beginning his career in 1973, Melton has saddled 1,322 winners and the earners of more than $4.9 million. Stakes winners he's trained include Grade 1 winners Juno Dat Honor and Famous Chapelle, and Grade 2 winners Shes A Royal Flirt, Mr Deep Pockets, Royal Peepers and Famous Alibis. Melton lives in Kennewick, Washington.
  • Jockey Clark Jones was the second-leading American Quarter Horse jockey at Les Bois Park this season. Jones is married to jockey Cammie Papineau, who rode Grade 1 winner Royal N Perfect to a fifth-place finish in the 1997 All American Futurity. Since beginning his career in 1990, Jones has ridden 380 winners and the earners of $1,454,058, including 1995 Silver Dollar Futurity (RG1) winner Juno Dat Honor and Evergreen Futurity (RG2) winners Your So Awesome and First Adashin. Jones and Papineau plan to ride at Turf Paradise during the track's 2002-03 meet.

PEDIGREE NOTES:

  • Racing exclusively in California from 1986-87, sire Chicks Beduino won the Bay Meadows (G1) and Governor's Cup (RG3) futurities and earned $412,999. From 12 crops, the 18-year-old stallion by Beduino (TB) has sired 97 stakes winners, six champions and the earners of more than $20.2 million. Bred by Californian's Joe Muniz and John Bobenreith, Chicks Beduino stands at Blane Schvaneveldt Ranch in Romoland, California.
  • Dam Calyx Wager is a 13-year-old Idaho-bred daughter of Calyx, the sport's first champion distance horse. Meteoric is a full brother to stakes winner Zalo El Inteligente and a half to graded stakes winner Paladium.
