Funny Cide, the first New York-bred to win the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, who captured the hearts and imagination of millions worldwide in his pursuit of the 2003 Triple Crown, was honored with a retirement party on Friday at Saratoga Race Course, close to the farm where he was foaled.
Fans on hand were able to enjoy Funny Cide ice cream, pick up a free poster designed by Daily Racing Form cartoonist Peb, and have their posters and other memorabilia signed by jockey and new Hall of Fame inductee Jose Santos and two of the managing partners of Sackatoga Stable, Jack Knowlton and David Mahan. Fans also signed an oversized "best wishes" card and were able to see his Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Jockey Club Gold Cup trophies up close.
This was Funny Cide's first public appearance since his retirement was announced just prior to the start of the 2007 Saratoga race meeting. The 7-year-old gelding, who earned more than $3.5 million, won the final race of his career, the Wadsworth Handicap on July 4 at Finger Lakes. He retired sound and will remain with trainer Barclay Tagg as the stable pony.
"Funny Cide was a galvanizing force for both the sport's most devoted fans and for the casual observer," said NYRA President and CEO Charlie Hayward. "Just like Seabiscuit who helped rekindle America's passion for horse racing, Funny Cide reignited America's love affair with the game. We are proud to host him and his connections, including Jack Knowlton and Sackatoga Stable, trainer Barclay Tagg and Hall of Fame jockey Jose Santos, on this most memorable day."
During the actual ceremony, Funny Cide was saddled in the paddock and paraded up and down the stretch by assistant trainer Robin Smullen, who was his regular exercise rider. Fans cheered as well as sung along when "Wind Beneath My Wings" played on the loudspeaker system. He also led the post parade for the 4th race on Friday afternoon. Co-owner David Mahan said, "I never thought this morning I'd be crying this afternoon, I really didn't. When he walked by me and they started playing the Bette Midler song, I just couldn't help myself. God, he looked so beautiful out there and the crowd clapping for him. I didn't know what to expect today, but I didn't think it was this."
