Thursday morning, June 23, the post positions were selected for the 146th running of the $1,000,000 Queen's Plate during a breakfast ceremony in the Woodbine walking ring. A field of ten Canadian-bred three-year-olds will go to post on Sunday in the 1 1/4 mile classic. Each will carry 126 pounds except the filly Gold Strike who will tote 121. The Queen's Plate is the first race of Canada's Triple Crown, which continues with the Prince of Wales Stakes at Fort Erie on July 17 and the Breeders' Stakes at Woodbine on August 7. The full Woodbine card will be shown on The Score network in Canada, with the Plate going off at 5:07PM ET. The Queen's Plate will also be simulcast to many locations throughout the United States.
Dance With Ravens, representing the powerhouse Sam-Son Farms and a son of A.P. Indy out of Dance Smartly, was installed as the 5-2 favorite on the morning line. Trainer Mark Frostad, who chose post 9, said "He's coming up to the race in great shape. If it was a beauty contest I'd be a lot more confident. Unlike his half-brother (2000 winner) Scatter The Gold, who probably never did understand what it was all about, this guy's starting to tune in. He'll certainly get the mile and a quarter. It won't be a problem for him at all. He's very talented, he'll relax, so we'll see."
Labatt Woodbine Oaks winner Gold Strike, the lone filly in the field, is the 3-1 second choice and will break from post 7. Trainer Reade Baker said, "It was Jim's (jockey McAleney) choice, so if anything goes wrong it's his fault. We wanted to avoid the inside but not get hung out either. We thought about 6 but with the double loading we didn't want to be sitting in the gate too long. I'm not concerned about the distance, I'm concerned about the time between races. I'd rather have more time. The two weeks really isn't what we want. When she came home (winning the Oaks on June 12), it was awful hot that day, but she's galloped great ever since. We're very hopeful."
Plate Trial winner Three in the Bag is the 4-1 third choice and will break from the 8 hole. Ownership group Castletop Farm's racing manager Neil Winnick said, "We were having trouble getting this horse to rate, but when we came here the other day it looked like he can get the mile and a quarter. Whether he rates or goes to the front will be up to the jockey. He'll play it the way it comes in."
Trainer Phil England chose post 2 for 50-1 outsider Molinaro Beau. When asked why he was entered, England said, "You need a couple more longshots in here and we think he'll go the distance. We took his blinkers off, so he's going to be at the back and he'll be coming from off the pace." A maiden, Molinaro Beau is going into the Plate off of back-to-back 5th place finishes in maiden special weight company, with 55 Beyer figures in each. His owners, Molinaro Stable, won the Queen's Plate in 2002 with longshot T J's Lucky Moon at 82-1.
