June 22, 2006
Thursday morning, June 22, the post positions were selected for the 147th running of the $1,000,000 Queen's Plate during a breakfast ceremony in the Woodbine walking ring. A field of thirteen Canadian-bred three-year-olds will go to post on Sunday in the 1 1/4 mile classic, each carrying 126 pounds. The Queen's Plate is the first race of Canada's Triple Crown, which continues with the Prince of Wales Stakes at Fort Erie on July 16 and the Breeders' Stakes at Woodbine on August 6. The full Woodbine card will be shown on TSN in Canada from 5:30-6:30pm, with the Plate going off at 6:07PM ET. The Queen's Plate will also be simulcast to many locations throughout the United States.
Clara Hughes, 2006 Turin Olympics speed skating gold medallist, was the guest drawmaster. The selection order for post positions was drawn first, via the traditional pill-pull, followed by the choosing of post positions by the connections for each horse, a system which has been in place since 1998.
The likely favorite is Wanna Runner, trained by California-based Bob Baffert, who comes into the Queen's Plate fresh from two convincing wins in the US. His last start was a convincing win in the Grade 3 Lone Star Derby at Lone Star Park, May 13, preceded by a four and three-quarter length tally in the $600,000 WinStar Derby, April 1 at Sunland Park in New Mexico. Earlier in the year, he finished third to Brother Derek and 2005 two-year-old Eclipse Award champion Stevie Wonderboy in the San Rafael Stakes at Santa Anita, January 14. The Ontario-bred son of El Corredor will be ridden by Victor Espinoza, currently the third leading rider in North America in purses, with over $6.6 million.
