Thursday morning, June 21, the post positions were selected for the 148th running of the $1,000,000 Queen's Plate during a breakfast ceremony in the Woodbine walking ring. A field of nine Canadian-bred three-year-olds will go to post on Sunday in the 1 1/4 mile classic, each carrying 126 pounds. The Queen's Plate is the first race of Canada's Triple Crown, which continues with the Prince of Wales Stakes at Fort Erie on July 15 and the Breeders' Stakes at Woodbine on August 5. The race will be shown on TSN in Canada from 4:00-5:00PM ET, with the Plate going off at 4:37PM. The Queen's Plate will also be simulcast to many locations throughout the United States.
The selection order for post positions was drawn first, via the traditional pill-pull, followed by the choosing of post positions by the connections for each horse, a system which has been in place since 1998.
The likely favorite, listed at 9-5 on the morning line, is Jiggs Coz, who goes into the Plate off a 3-race winning streak, including an easy 3 1/2 length romp in the Plate Trial in his final prep. Trainer Sid Attard choice Post 6, saying "He wore number 6 in the Plate Trial, so we'll stick with the 6. He's training really really good and he'll move forward from that last start. It feels good to have the Plate favorite. He ran a big race in the Trial, and I think he improves 5 lengths every time he runs." Regular rider David Clark will be in the irons once again.
Leading the "foreign" contingent is Todd Pletcher trainee Twilight Meteor, 4-1 third choice on the morning line, who will have John Velazquez aboard on Sunday. After winning the Bourbon Stakes at Keeneland and the Hallandale Beach Stakes at Gulfstream, he finished a well-beaten 6th to Hard Spun in the Lane's End Stakes at Turfway, which effectively took him off the U.S. Triple Crown trail and into "plan B", the Canadian Triple Crown. He was 3rd in the Straight Deal Stakes at Belmont in his final prep.
