The celebrities of the racing world came to the Beverly Wilshire Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills, California on Monday night January 22nd for the 2006 Eclipse Awards. Breeders' Cup Classic victor Invasor came out the big winner, as he was named Champion Older Male and Horse of the Year. In the hotly contested 3-year-old championship balloting, there was much debate as to whether it should go to Barbaro or Bernardini. In the final count, Bernardini got 210 votes while sentimental favorite Barbaro only got 56. This year 86% of eligible ballots were cast, up from 80% last year.

This year held more surprises than usual with turf specialist Wait a While winning for 3-year-old filly and Breeders' Cup Mile winner Miesque's Approval getting older turf male. The biggest surprise was probably the tie for top owner between Sheikh Mohammed's Darley Stable and Roy and Gretchen Jackson's Lael Stables, only the fourth tie in the history of the Eclipse Awards.

Although there were some surprises, there were also several repeat winners. Trainer Todd Pletcher took home trainer for the third year in a row, Frank Stronach's Adena Springs got their fourth Champion Breeder title, Ouija Board picked up her second Champion Turf Female Eclipse, and McDynamo won top steeplechaser honors for the third year in a row. Other popular winners were Edgar Prado for top jockey and Julien Leparoux for top apprentice jockey.

All the winners are listed below with the actual vote totals. A link to a full profile is given for each horse and person. 2006 DRF past performances for all the horses can be viewed here. To see all this years finalists with profiles for each, check here. You can look up past year's winners here.
