The 2010 Eclipse Awards were handed out at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach, Florida on Monday night, January 17. Zenyatta, who retired a near-perfect 19-for-20 lifetime, after a head defeat in the Breeders' Cup Classic in what was her final start, was voted Horse of the Year over Blame by a close 128-102 margin. Zenyatta, who won the Santa Margarita, Apple Blossom, Clement Hirsch, and Lady's Secret (all Grade 1) before losing at Churchill Downs, was also named Champion Older Female, with only one vote cast against her. This year a record 238 out of the 251 eligible voters (94.8%) cast ballots, and votes were tabulated and certified by Strothman and Company.
Blame was the only horse to be unanimously voted for an award, for Champion Older Male. He won the William Donald Schaefer (G3), the Whitney Handicap (G1), and the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1), with his only defeat occurring in the Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1). In the jockey categories, Ramon Dominguez was honored with his first Eclipse as Outstanding Jockey, while Woodbine-based rider Omar Moreno won Outstanding Apprentice Jockey in a landslide, with 197 votes over just 6 for the closest rival. Todd Pletcher won his fifth Outstanding Trainer award, while WinStar Farm, whose Super Saver gave Pletcher his first Kentucky Derby, took home Outstanding Owner honors. The tightest vote was for Outstanding Breeder where Frank Stronach's Adena Springs edged out Claiborne Farm and Adele Dilschneider, breeders of Blame, by just 14 votes.
