Pool One of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager is now closed and "All Other 3-year-olds" was made the heavy favorite at 2-1 with Declan's Moon a distance second at 9-1. A new record for wagering was set as $620,362 was bet over the four days, easily eclipsing the previous record of $577,889 and marking the first time a single pool topped $600,000.
As in the past, the Oaks Future Wager was not nearly as popular with only $69,928 wagered. Sweet Catomine was favored by a few dollars over "All Other 3-year-old Fillies" with both closing at odds of 9-2. Wagering on Balletto was suspended Thursday after she was injured and taken out of consideration for the Oaks.
Full final odds for Pool 1 are in the table below. Pool 2 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager is set for March 10-13 and the third and final KDFW pool of 2005 is scheduled for April 7-10.
The Kentucky Derby Future Wager allows racing fans to bet on candidates for the Kentucky Derby at odds that could be more attractive than those they would receive on Derby Day. The winning payout for each pool is based on the odds at the close of betting of that specific pool. Payouts are made when the race is declared "official."
"The Kentucky Derby picture is always uncertain at this time of year and there's no reason to believe that any of the individual horses in this year's first Derby Future pool will attract enough support to supplant the mutuel field as the favorite," said Battaglia. "The pool offers a good mix of proven performers and rising stars, but none of the individual horses has done enough to this point to become a solid Derby favorite and there's a pretty good chance that the eventual Derby winner has yet to step forward."
