In the first leg of the Championship, Glen Boss aboard 12-1 shot Harry Harry sat in mid-pack off the pace set by X-Speed and American rider Javier Castellano as the latter set quick fractions of 36.30 for 3/8 and 1:02.10 for 5/8. At the top of the stretch, Boss swung Harry Harry out into the center of the course for running room, as the K.L. Man trainee switched leads and surged to the front, passing the tiring pacesetters to win going away by 1 1/2 lengths over Silver Mark and jockey Ryan Moore in a time of 1:50.40 for the 1800 meter (about 1 1/8 mile) trip. Eventual champion Peslier was fifth in this leg aboard Specific Sorceror.
