The highlight of the Cathay Pacific International Races and the richest horse race in Hong Kong is the HK$20 million ($2.6 million U.S.) Hong Kong Cup (G1). Epsom Oaks (G1) and Irish Oaks (G1) winner Snow Fairy, one of three fillies taking on males, was sent off as the 3-2 favorite in this 2000 meter (about 1 1/4 mile) trip, off her win in the Queen Elizabeth II Commemorative Cup (G1) at Kyoto. In to challenge her included 4-1 second choice Collection, fifth in the Jockey Club Cup (G2) last out and winless since the Hong Kong Gold Cup in February, and 5-1 third choice and defending champion Vision d'Etat, second in the Champion Stakes (G1) at Newmarket after winning the Prix Gontaut-Biron (G3) at Deauville.
Packing Winner went to the lead on the clubhouse turn and set a pace of 25.98, 51.17, 1:16.55, and 1:40.03 while pressed by Cirrus des Aigles, with Super Pistachio drafting behind the lead pair. Snow Fairy was unhurried in 12th early. Into the lane, Irian, who had raced in midpack early, put in his rally and gained the lead inside the 1/8 pole, but Snow Fairy closed well late to nail him at the line, prevailing by a neck in 2:02.96 over the good turf course. It was another 1 3/4 lengths back to Packing Winner third.
