The best 3-year-old pacers gathered at the Meadowlands Racetrack in New Jersey for the $1.1 million Meadowlands Pace, one full circuit of the one-mile oval in East Rutherford, before a crowd of 16,907 on Saturday night. North America Cup winner Somebeachsomewhere, undefeated in his career and making his first start outside Canada, was sent off as the 1-10 choice in the field of nine. Because of his low odds, the rest of the field went off at double-digits, including 10-1 second choice Badlands Nitro and 12-1 Art Official.
Art Official got the early lead while parked wide on the clubhouse turn through 1/4 mile in 26 seconds, while Somebeachsomewhere, widest of all, moved up on the backstretch to get the lead after a half mile in 51 4/5. Driver Paul MacDonell moved the favorite back to the inside to save ground on the far turn, while being pressured to the outside by Bullville Powerful and Art Official in behind. Getting 3/4 in 1:19 1/5, Somebeachsomewhere looked homefree at the top of the lane. However, Art Official had something left for the drive. Ron Pierce moved him outside for room and quickly closed the gap on the favorite, moving alongside Somebeachsomewhere with a furlong remaining. MacDonell whipped Somebeachsomewhere but it was futile, as Art Official poked his neck in front in the final few yards to get the win in a new world record time of 1:47 for 3-year-old pacers on a mile track, just 1/5 off the all-ages record. It was 5 1/4 lengths back to third place finisher Share the Delight.
