The $1.5 million Pepsi North America Cup is the richest harness race in Canada. A full field of ten of the best 3-year-old pacing colts will line up behind the starter on Saturday night, determined by elimination heats run last Saturday.
The race in its current form was inaugurated in 1984, and some of the biggest names in recent standardbred history have won it - Jate Lobell, Precious Bunny, Presidential Ball, Cam´s Card Shark, and Gothic Dream. In 1982, the great Cam Fella won the forerunner to the North America Cup, the Queen City Pace at Greenwood, and went on to sire four winners, while 1987 winner Jate Lobell has sired three.
This year´s 2-1 morning line favorite is Feelin Friskie out of post position 2, winner of 3 out of 4 starts so far this year, including the New Jersey Classic at the Meadowlands, and won the fastest elimination heat. Driver John Campbell looks to increase his record to seven wins in this event, but he hasn´t won since The Panderosa in 1999. Last year´s champion 2-year-old colt pacer on both sides of the border and the field´s leading money earner, Jereme´s Jet, looks to upset the favorite at odds of 6-1 from the outside post 10 with local driver Paul MacDonell in the sulky. He finished a disappointing fourth in a troubled trip in his elimination heat.
The North America Cup is scheduled as race 6 on the Saturday evening card, which also includes the $559,200 Elegantimage Stakes for 3-year-old trotting fillies and the $280,600 Goodtimes Stakes for 3-year-old trotting colts.
