The finest pacers and trotters in North America will be showcased on Saturday evening, October 27, at Woodbine Racetrack when the 12 Breeders Crown championship finals, worth a total of $6.2 million, are run. This is the second year in a row that Woodbine will host this prestigiouse event, and only the third time in history (the first was 2010 at Pocono Downs) that all 12 races are run on the same night. All races will be run at the standard distance of 1 mile over the 7/8 mile stonedust oval.

Eliminations (for overdrawn races) were run on the previous Friday and Saturday to determine who gets into the finals, and post positions were drawn for 11 of the 12 races. The posts for the $555,000 Three-Year-Old Colt and Gelding Trot were drawn at a special lunchtime ceremony at WEGZ Stadium Bar on Tuesday.

On hand to assist with the proceedings was Toronto Maple Leafs forward James van Riemsdyk, recently acquired in a trade with the Philadelphia Flyers but has yet to play a game for the Leafs due to the current NHL lockout. The native of Middletown, New Jersey was drafted in 2007 by the Flyers and played in Philadelphia for 3 seasons. During a short interview on stage with track announcer Ken Middletown he mentioned going to the harness races at Freehold Raceway in New Jersey. Van Riemsdyk drew the name cards while racing secretary Scott McKelvie drew the numbered billiard balls out of a large bucket in the traditional "double blind" system.

The $555,000 Colt and Gelding Trot is carded as the 10th race at 10:39pm ET, and a field of 10 was drawn, plus two also-eligibles. Hambletonian and Canadian Trotting Classic winner Market Share is the 2-1 morning line favorite out of post 8. The Linda Toscano trainee has earned $1.7 million this season, and will have regular driver Tim Tetrick in the bike. Toscano said, "I'd rather have the 4. We will just have to race him accordingly. The good part about him is he does have gate speed. Hopefully he'll land a spot. If not, we'll just kind of get out early and follow cover. He is versatile and he's got a great driver so we'll do the best we can." Intimidate, who defeated Market Share in their elimination, is the 5-2 second choice out of post 3. Trainer Luc Blais had to switch to driver Ron Pierce after regular driver Sylvain Filion committed to Prestigitator. Blais said, "Ron drove him in the Simcoe and said he had a good feeling about the horse. He came and saw me before the (Breeders Crown) elimination and said, 'If you need a driver, I want to drive that horse. I like that horse.'"

Some of the other stars set to shine on Saturday include two-year-old colt pacer Captaintreacherous and three-year-old filly trotter Check Me Out, last year's Crown victress, while eight other Crown winners from last year - Sweet Lou, Chapter Seven, Economy Terror, Monkey On My Wheel, Cedar Dove, Bettor Sweet, Anndrovette and Frenchfrysnvinegar have also returned.

The Breeders Crown races will begin at 6:30pm with the $250,000 Open Mare Trot and will end up at 11:05pm with the $500,000 Open Pace. Among the marketing activities on Breeders Crown night will be a lucky draw for a 2012 Chevy Silverado. In addition, there will be two $100,000 Guaranteed Pick 4’s, Early (Races 4-7) and Late (Races 8-11).

Live coverage of 10 of the 12 finals will be televised on The Score in Canada and MAV-TV in the U.S. from 7-11:30pm. As well, all 12 races will be shown live on TVG in the U.S. and HPI-TV in Canada, as well as at simulcast sites across North America. You can also listen to the live race calls via satellite radio on Sirius channel 93 and XM channel 209. Free past performances are be available from Standardbred Canada here, the U.S. Trotting Association here, and from Woodbine here.
