Clearly, Aidan O'Brien's jockeys were under "team orders". O'Brien horse Song of Hiawatha took over the lead from Dragon Dancer to set an honest pace for Dylan Thomas to run at. He led the procession down the Longchamp backstretch and around the sweeping far turn, while regular rider Frankie Dettori settled Authorized well off the pace in last. Entering the stretch, Song of Hiawatha tired and was eased late, as Soldier of Fortune (also trained by O'Brien) took over the lead for the drive. Dylan Thomas, who sat back in 9th early, split horses at the 3/16 pole when asked by Kieren Fallon, but possibly interfered with Zambezi Sun while angling over toward the rail. He took over the lead at the 200 meter pole but 80-1 outsider Youmzain was slowly eating into his lead. The finish line came soon enough as Dylan Thomas held off Youmzain by a head in 2:28.50. 32-1 Sagara finished 1 1/2 lengths back in third, while favorite Authorized failed to fire when asked by Dettori in the stretch, and he finished a disappointing tenth.

Immediately after the horses crossed the finish, the inquiry sign came up. The stewards examined the stretch run and interviewed the jockeys, investigating whether Dylan Thomas interfered with eventual 8th place finisher Zambezi Sun. After a 35-minute delay, the stewards allowed the result to stand.
