Juveniles colts sprinted 1400 meters (about 7 furlongs) in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere (Grand Criterium) (G1) for a purse of 350,000 euros, the richest race on the undercard. 9-5 second choice Holy Roman Emperor was held up early while 23-1 Fleeting Shadow and 6-1 Battle Paint set a brisk early pace up front. Holy Roman Emperor moved up to sixth place entering the stretch, and then responded when asked by Kieren Fallon at the 3/16 pole to win by 2 lengths over 6-1 Battle Paint in a time of 1:18.60. 7-5 favorite Visionario was wide throughout, back in 8th at the top of the stretch, and put in a late bid of his own but tired late to disappoint in sixth.
