She ended her career with a record of 19 wins and one second in 20 lifetime starts and total earnings of $7,304,580, a North American record for fillies and mares. She tallied 13 Grade 1 victories including the 2008 Breeders' Cup Ladies Classic and the 2009 Breeders' Cup Classic, as the only distaffer to win North America's richest horse race. She earned Eclipse Awards as champion older mare in both 2008 and 2009, an award she is expected to win again this year, and is a favorite for the Horse of the Year title, which she was denied last year in a close vote against Rachel Alexandra.
Alex Waldrop, president and CEO or the NTRA, said, "Zenyatta was one of the most memorable Thoroughbreds ever to grace the American racing stage. Her record stands on its own merits, as does the impact she had on millions of fans all around the world. We salute Jerry and Ann Moss, John Shirreffs, Mike Smith and-most of all-Zenyatta, herself, for what was an unforgettable career."
Blood-Horse writer Steve Haskin wrote in the magazine, "Those six inches that separated her from an unbeaten record will be more and more inconsequential as the years go by, consumed by the vast scope of her accomplishments."
Hollywood Park is expected to host a retirement event on Sunday December 5, when Zenyatta will be paraded in front of her hometown fans for the final time before being shipped east to her new home. Hollywood president Jack Liebau said, "We haven't worked out the details. We're getting a bunch of calls from people who want to see the horse."
Jerry Moss said, “We think Lane’s End will do a great job with her. They’re good people, and I’m happy we could work something out with them. We’ve talked about her public following with Bill Farish, and we’ll abide by what the farm’s requirements are as far as security for her and how they want to handle that as it concerns her fans.”
Lane's End Farm owner Bill Farish said, “We’ve had some great mares on the farm like Miesque and Azeri, but this transcends that. We want to do what we can (about accommodating the public), but it’s difficult with broodmares. It’s not like a stallion situation where you have the barn right there. We’re still wrestling with that and I’m not sure how it’s going to work. This is unlike anything we’ve ever seen. Her reach is incredible. It’s exciting and I hope it goes smoothly, and we’re going to be working on plans. Her arrival will be open just to the media.”
