Equine Charities

Many of these organizations rescue injured or unwanted horses at the track to be rehabilitated and retrained for new careers. These horses give us lots of enjoyment (and sometimes profit) at the track so give a bit of that back by helping them have a healthy and happy retirement.

American Standardbred Adoption Program

Finds temporary homes to harness racing horses which have been donated after they have retired from racing. The horses are then adopted by someone who will give them a good home. They serve Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, and Michigan.

Avalon Rose Farm Stable and Equine Rescue

Equine rescue and adoption in Massachusetts. Non-profit status has been applied for.

Bright Futures Farm

A non profit organization committed to a safe and dignified quality of life for horses that are no longer deemed useful by their current owners.

California Equine Retirement Foundation

Non-profit organization for the rescue, rehabilitation, and adoption of retired race horses in California.

C.A.N.T.E.R.

Communication Alliance to Network Thoroughbred Ex-Racehorses. A 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to helping Thoroughbred Ex-racehorses find new, fulfilling careers outside of racing.

Colorado Horse Rescue

Non-profit organization to find new homes for abandoned, abused, neglected or unwanted horses of all breeds.

Days End Farm Horse Rescue

Non-profit organization for the rescue and placement of abused horses in Maryland. Also take other animals if necessary.

Equine Rescue Inc.

A 501(c)3 registered charity for all-breed rescue located in Orange County, NY

Equine Rescue League

A tax-exempt non-profit agency in Virginia that provides care and shelter to abused, neglected, or unwanted horses and ponies.

Equine Rescue Network Inc.

ERNi is a nonprofit organization incorporated to prevent the abuse of equines through education and by supporting and fostering the growth and effectiveness of equine rescue organizatons throughout the United States. Also has a mailing list now.

Equine Rescue Net

The ERNet's primary purpose is to provide on the Web educational materials and resources, and guides to other information useful to equine rescue in general and equine rescue organizations in particular. The ERNet is a sponsored project of ERNi.

Equine Transitional Training Alliance

Non-profit organization for the rescue, rehabilitation, and adoption of all breeds of horses in Kentucky.

Equus Sanctuary

Non-profit horse sanctuary outside Los Angeles.

Exceller Fund for Rescued Horses

The Exceller Fund is a group of individual contributors who, in cooperation with United Pegasus Foundation, sponsors retired Thoroughbred racehorses rescued from slaughter.

Georgia Equine Rescue League

Non-profit organization for the rescue, rehabilitation, and adoption of horses in Georgia.

Hooved Animal Humane Society

Non-profit organization for the rescue, rehabilitation, and adoption of horses and other hooved animals in Illinois.

H.O.R.S.E. (Help Our Rescue Save Equines) Rescue & Sanctuary

A non-breed specific non-profit horse rescue and sanctuary in Ventura County California, 60 miles north of Los Angeles. Takes in horses of all ages and breeds and whenever possible adopted out to caring homes.

Horse Protection League

A non-profit organization dedicated to the welfare of horses, ponies, donkeys, and mules in the greater Rockey Mountain Region.

Horse Aid

Horse rescue, rehab, and adoption organization based in California but with chapters across the US. None of their literature says they are non-profit so check first.

Horsefaces

A network of volunteers who help transport rescued horses, donkeys, and burros to their new homes. They provide free transportation services and overnight accommodations (where needed) for equines who have been rescued, retired, or injured in hopes this will help more be adopted.

Horses' Haven

A non-profit organization in Michigan whose goal is to take in and provide care for aged, abused, unwanted or neglected horses.

Last Chance Corral

Non-profit horse rescue in Athens, Ohio, that specializes in adoption services.

Life Is For Everything

L.I.F.E., a 501(c)(3) charity, continues its equine programs through the training of animal control, humane society, and equine rescue organization staff on equine care and rehabilitation, as well as abuse investigation. L.I.F.E. is also especially concerned and informative on the subject of Wild Horses and Burros.

Lost & Found Horse Rescue

York, PA, organization dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of equine from slaughter, starvation, neglect, and abuse. Also do rehab and adoption of retired racers.

Major Storm Retirement Fund

Page for a retired race horse saved from abuse by an uncaring owner by contributions from previous owners and friends on the internet. He is now enjoying a life of leisure with a new, loving owner.

Mylestone Equine Rescue

Non-profit organization for the rescue, rehabilitation, and placement of abused horses in New Jersey.

National Thoroughbred Trust (South Africa)

South African charity for the rescue and rehabilitation of abused race horses.

MN Hooved Animal Rescue Foundation

Non-profit does rescue, rehab, and adoption for all types of hooved animals in Minnesota. Includes an entry point for the Equine Rescue Web Ring.

New Vocations Racehorse Adoption

Accepts both Thoroughbreds and Standardbreds, retiring racehorses and unprofitable broodmares. Has not received a 501(c)(3) non-profit ruling yet but has applied.

NH Equine Humane Association

New Hampshire's only private, non-profit equine humane organization. They rescue, rehab, and adopt out abused horses.

Ohio Hooved Animal Humane Society

A non-profit organization dedicated to the welfare of horses and ponies in Ohio.

Ontario Standardbred Adoption Society

An approved charitable organization founded in 1996 to assist in the adoption and relocation of retired and non-racing Standardbred horses within Ontario.

The Piedra Foundation

All volunteer charitable organization created by horsemen to promote education, fund research, and provide financial assistance to owners of critically ill horses.

Rainbow Acres Horse Rescue

Horse rescue in Carlisle, PA, that says not for profit. Specializing in rescue, rehab, and saving PMU foals.

Recycle Racehorses

Offers an information exchange service for people with horses and people wanting horses.

Redwings Horse Sactuary

Our Mission: To educate about the care and plight of horses, ponies,donkeys and to protect them from abuse and slaughter. 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization.

ReRun - Recycling Racehorses

Rehab, retraining, and adoption of retired thoroughbreds in Kentucky. They are a registered non-profit.

SafeHorse

Privately owned and funded, SafeHorse was formed to care for and rescue neglected and abused horses. (located in Texas)

Second Chance Horse Rescue Ranch

An all volunteer, Washington State registered, non-profit organization dedicated soley to the protection of horses.

Second Chance Horse Refuge

A private, non-profit organization dedicated to rehabilitating, training and locating stable, loving homes for abused and neglected horses in Texas.

Standardbred Pleasure Horse Organization

The Standardbred Pleasure Horse Organization is a national group of horse enthusiasts sharing a concern for the "recycling" of ex-harness racing horses. There are nine SPHO State and Regional Chapters in the United States.

Standardbred Retirement Foundation

501(c)3 non-profit organization created to care for and locate new homes and opportunities for Standardbred horses. Over 1000 adoptions so far.

Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation

The pioneering forerunner for similar operations and remains the largest humane organization dedicated to the rescue of racehorses when they can no longer run.

Tri-State Equine Adoption and Rescue

Non-profit organization in Delaware dedicated to rescuing slaughter bound horses.

United Pegasus Foundation

Non-profit organization dedicated to the protection of horses from abuse and slaughter, mostly work with retired race horses. Located in Arcadia, CA.

Western NY Equine Sanctuary

Dedicated to providing refuge and sanctuary to Premarin foals, former race horses, and any injured or abused horse in need.
