The $2 million NetJets Breeders Cup Mile (G1) is a 1 mile trip around two turns over the Churchill turf course. European invader Araafa was the 3-1 favorite in the full field of 14, with California-based Aragorn the 4-1 second choice. 32-1 Silent Name was allowed an uncontested lead through fractions of 23.32 and 46.76 over the firm course, while the two favorites sat in mid-pack unhurried. Entering the stretch, Silent Name still had the lead but was being challenged by 15-1 Badge of Silver after 3/4 in 1:10.98. The pair battled it out from the 3/16 pole, but both tired badly from the early duel as late-closing Miesques Approval ran right by them down the center of the course to win by 2 3/4 lengths over Aragorn who also put in a rally. Badge of Silver hung on for third. The running time was 1:34.75.
Winning trainer Martin Wolfson said, "That's
the way he's run all year. He deserved it." Jockey Eddie Castro, celebrating his first Cup win, added, "Marty
(Wolfson) gave me instructions to ride him the same way as in the
Sunshine Millions. I took him back and at the 3/8-pole started to move,
and then I took a chance to take him to the outside. He likes the
outside. I'm very happy."
