Emirates Airline Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf (G1)
Distance: 1 3/8 Miles (Turf)
Conditions: 3 Year Olds and Up Fillies and Mares
Purse: $2 Million
Post Time: 6:50pm

A total of 17 horses were pre-entered in the Filly and Mare Turf but only 12 made the final field on October 31, as several opted to go in other races.

The Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf (G1) was the first new race to added to the Breeders' Cup World Championships after the original seven races. It was introduced in 1999 at Gulfstream Park, and was graded Grade 1 status by the American Graded Stakes Committee for its inaugural running. Future additions to the Championship program were not afforded this treatment and were all run as ungraded for at least 2 years. Its official distance is 1 1/4 miles on the turf, however, American racetracks with 7 furlong turf ovals (with the exception of Santa Anita) cannot offer this distance so the alternate distance is 1 3/8 miles. There has been one repeat winner of the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf, Ouija Board in 2004 at Lone Star Park and 2006 at Churchill Downs. It is worth noting that both of her wins were at 1 3/8 miles, while she failed to win as the favorite in 2005 at Belmont Park at 1 1/4 miles. The fastest running at 1 1/4 miles was Midday in 2009, in 1:59.14 at Santa Anita, while the slowest was Intercontinental's 2:02.43 in 2005. At 1 3/8 miles, Perfect Sting ran the fastest, 2:13.07 at Churchill Downs in 2000, while Lahudood ran it in 2:22.75 over a very soft, rain-soaked Monmouth turf in 2007. Jerry Bailey (retired), who won the first two editions (Soaring Softly in 1999, Perfect Sting in 2000), and Kieren Fallon (Islington in 2003, Ouija Board in 2004) are the only jockeys with multiple wins in this race.
