The Bottom Line

Because of their traditionally low payoffs, straight betting (win/place/show) has fell out of favor with horseplayers, who now bet into the exotic pools with both fists. The huge payoffs for winning exotic tickets attract bettors at all levels of bankroll, hoping to hit a huge trifecta or the grand prize of them all, the pick six. DRF publisher Steven Crist, the "King of the Pick Six", sets out to instruct contemporary bettors on playing these high-risk, high-reward wagering pools.
Pros
  • A thorough study of optimal betting strategies for exotic wagers
  • Mathematics is simple to understand, writing style easy to follow
  • Crist helps bettors at all levels of bankroll from weekend player to professional
Cons
  • Novice horseplayers need to sharpen handicapping skills before using Crist's techniques

Guide Review - Exotic Betting

Exotic betting clearly requires a high level of handicapping proficiency. For those able to pick winners or top-finishing horses with regularity, stepping up from straight pools to the exotics is a logical move indeed. But many make the same crucial mistakes in money management. Exotic betting expert Steven Crist demonstrates, using simple math, that simply "boxing" or "part-wheeling" too many horses is a losing proposition. Multiple bets need to be written out well in advance. For example, it took him 19 minutes to key in all his pick 4 and pick 6 wagers at the 2005 Breeders' Cup at Belmont Park.

Bettors usually specialize in intrarace (exacta, trifecta, superfecta) or multirace (double, pick 3/4, pick 6) bets. For example, one that studies entire cards ahead of time and is good at picking winners should be playing the rolling pick threes, while those who like to do their final handicapping between races should focus on intrarace bets.

The major difference between straight and exotic betting is taxation. Payoffs in excess of $5000 are subject to automatic 25% withholding. Crist takes the time to explain the tax laws in easy to understand language, as this is an area some horseplayers do not fully understand. He shows the worst example of IRS withholding, when his $2000 profit at last year's Breeders' Cup was reduced to just $24. Clearly this is an area where horse racing is unfairly treated compared to casinos.
