Eclipse Press

The Bottom Line

Much has happened in Thoroughbred racing in the past 100 years. But which moments during that time truly made an impact on the sport which will linger forever? Eclipse Press chose eight top historians and writers to collectively choose the top 100 moments of the last 100 years, and to write an article for each moment. Although the ranking order will be a source of debate among racing fans, few can argue with the choices they did make. This is an excellent work that every fan will enjoy.
Pros
  • An interesting look at the last 100 years of racing history
  • Few could argue with the choices made by the panel of experts
  • Moments include racing events, innovations, and tragedies
  • Excellent articles by some of racing's best writers
  • Many photographs are included to help the reader visualize the moment
Cons
  • Too U.S. focused -- foreign racing moments were very few

Guide Review - Horse Racing's Top 100 Moments

As the sample above demonstrates, not every moment will be a race result. Racing's defining moments include races which will be forever etched in our memory such as Secretariat's Belmont Stakes romp and Afleet Alex's Preakness stumble, innovations such as the Breeders' Cup and the starting gate, and tragedies such as the once-proud Calumet Farm falling into bankruptcy and being liquidated and Ruffian breaking down during her match race with Foolish Pleasure. William Nack, John McEvoy, Joe Hirsch, Steve Haskin, Alice Chandler, Morton Cathro, Timothy Capps, and Edward Bowen formed the all-star panel enlisted to decide on the moments, and, along with several other Blood-Horse turf writers, wrote the articles discussing the chosen moments.

The writers tell the reader about events which led to the moment happening, and explain the significance the moment had on racing to this day. For example, the first Washington D.C. International ushered in the current era of horses shipping around the world for major races, while the Pick 6 scandal led to changes to the North American tote system. The best photographs of the moment available were included, allowing the reader to go back in time and visualize when it happened.

An appendix is included, which sorts out the moments by decade, and by category (breeding, auctions, innovations, oddities, and racing), with a separate list of moments involving Kentucky Derby winners. As well, the appendix lists moments 101-125 which just missed the cut.
