Christmas Wishes for Rescued Horses
Dateline: 12/07/97Any time of year is a good time to think about helping the various equine rescue organizations, but Christmas is an especially good time. For the giver, it gets any tax deductible donation in before the end of the year and for the organzation, it helps them fill the needs that can be especially big in the cold winter months.
If you are interested in just the organizations that deal with retired or rescued race horses, I will include a list below. If you would like to view the entire list of equine charities that I have compiled, check here. Any of these organizations would welcome a cash contribution but for those with limited funds, there are many other ways you can help. If you live in the area, volunteers to help care for the horses are always welcome and no experience is needed, just willing hands and a desire to learn.
Jayne Pedigo of the Horses site is doing a similar page for general horse rescue charities so please visit her too.
Some organizations currently have much more specific needs:
California Equine Retirement Foundation has grown to 38 horses and needs to divide their large turnout area so about a dozen 24 four rail, five foot panels are badly needed. They also need a manure spreader, a hot-walker, and outside or field feeders. Anyone want to be their fairy godmother?
Equine Rescue League of Leesburg, Virginia, was going to have a barn raising, but some pressure tanks had to be replaced. They had to postpone until they can get the necessary materials, so donations of building materials would be very welcome. Other needs are: new farm--100-200 acres in Virginia (current farm is scheduled to be taken over for landfill expansion), gooseneck stock trailer, gooseneck flatbed trailer, good quality grass hay, Southern States Bonanza pellets, volunteers and foster families, gray exterior paint (& and painting services?), portable fencing panels, fax machine,
manure spreader, plumbing and electrical services, advertising, office supplies (9x12 and 6x9 envelopes, copier paper, manila file folders, large 3-ring binders, postage stamps), stable supplies (cotton lead ropes, double-ended snaps, flat-sided feed buckets, water hoses, muck buckets, light bulbs), Ivermectin and Strongid paste wormers, roll cotton, bandage scissors,
first aid supplies, and a folding table for information booths. They also always accept used tack and yard sale items for the sales and raffles at their Open Houses.
ETC Horse Rescue in Ocala, FL, has a long list of needed items: winter blankets sizes 78 to 88, play horse balls for stall recovery horses, ivomec liquid wormer, healing supplements (cosequin, flex free, msm), scope, microscope, centrifuge, x-ray, ultrasound tendon scanning, munk's live stock sling and ambulance (a cart type that can be pulled around and helps keep horse off the ground), chain hoist cap. 2000lbs, farleys boots, splint (flexion or compression), peach tree accounting program, digital camera for computer input, wireless intercom system, and conference tables.
Georgia Equine Rescue League needs anything horse related. As they said, "If we can't use it we can sell it and feed the horses with the money."
Hay Shortage: Day's End Farm Horse Rescue in Maryland and Equine Rescue League in Virgina are both having trouble finding hay they can afford due to a drought in that part of the country, so donations of hay or feed to either would be a great idea.
Mylestone Equine Rescue in New Jersey needs hay and grain (equine Senior) donations mainly. Any grooming supplies and wormers are greatly needed. They also have several horses on Dengi hay.
ReRun is having a silent auction in February and is looking for donated articles of any type. Anything is accepted and donation of $75 or more will be mentioned in the program.
United Pegasus Foundation has several items they need: shelters, carrots, hay, grain, wheel barrows, tools (shovels, picks etc.), an electric generator, and a tractor. How about a trip to their farm with 50 lbs. of carrots one weekend to give all the horses a treat? Sure to give you as much fun as the horses.
