A Breeders' Cup for the Record Books

Dateline: 11/08/00

This year's Breeders' Cup was one for the record books in many ways. Here is an over view of all the records set or tied this year.

  • Total Simulcast handle of $93,315,725 broke the old record of $85,419,282 set last year at Gulfstream Park.

  • Total handle of $108 million breaking the old record set last year by 8%.

  • Breeders' Cup race records broken:

Kona Gold, winner of the Sprint
    • Sprint: Kona Gold broke not only the Breeders' Cup record but the track record as well with a time of 1:07.77. The previous track record was 1:08.60 and the previous Breeders' Cup record was 1:07.89 set by Artax in 1999.
    • Filly and Mare Turf: Perfect Sting tied the track record and set a new Breeders' Cup record with a time of 2:13.07. The previous Breeders' Cup record was 2:13.89 set by Soaring Softly in 1999.

  • Total purses for the championship races was a new high of $15,200,000 due to the large number of supplemental entries.

  • There was a record number of supplemental pre-entrants with 18 as well as starters with 16. Check here to find out how much they all had to pay and how much (or little) they won.

  • New record number of pre-entrants with 135 (old record was 128 last year).

  • New record number of entrants with 105 (old record 102 last year).

  • New record number of total starters (scratches not included) of 102 (old was record 101 last year).

  • Jerry Bailey won 2 races to tie Pat Day for most wins by a jockey with 11 total.

  • Alex Solis finally broke his 31 race losing streak in the Breeders' Cup when he won the Sprint on Kona Gold.

War Chant, winner of the Mile
  • Danzig took the lead for most winners by a sire with 5 when War Chant won the Mile. Nureyev and Kris S. are tied with 4 winners each.

  • D. Wayne Lukas added one more to his record of most wins by a trainer with 16 total including Spain this year in the Distaff.

  • Macho Uno tied for smallest winning margin in the Juvenile with his nose victory over Point Given. This ties the 1985 Juvenile where Tasso beat Storm Cat by a nose.

  • Macho Uno is the second-youngest winner of the Juvenile, having been foaled on April 24 1998. Is It True (1988) is the youngest, foaled May 12 1986.

  • War Chant became the second foal out of a Breeders' Cup winning mare to win a Breeders' Cup race. His dam Hollywood Wildcat won the Distaff in 1993. The other is My Flag who won the Juvenile Fillies in 1995 and her dam Personal Ensign won the Distaff in 1988.

  • Tiznow became the first California bred to win a Breeders' Cup race when he won the Classic.
