The 2000 Juvenile was also one of the more contentious races of the day, with A P Valentine sent off as the lukewarm 2.40-1 favorite, and Flame Thrower, Street Cry, and Macho Uno all going off around 6-1 as the second to fourth choices respectively. City Zip, the best two year old earlier in the year, was a surprising 33-1.

At the start Shane Sellers sent Arabian Light to the front soon after the break and led every call except the one that counts most, setting fractions of 23.40, 46.98, 1:11.21 and 1:35.71. Macho Uno, rated in behind the leaders early, commenced his run to the inside of Arabian Light at the top of the stretch, but fell back of that one and Jerry Bailey altered his course to the outside. Taking the lead in the final furlong when soundly shaken up by the left hand whip, he suddenly veered out and had to be pulled back into line and outlasted the late charging Point Given for the win by a nose, stopping the timer in 1:42.05. Point Given was ten lengths out of it with 2 1/2 furlongs to go, but came out 10 wide under Gary Stevens and closed fast but just missed. California-based Godolphin entrant Street Cry was within 4 lengths of the leaders throughout, also came out wide in the stretch drive but could only gain slightly to get third, beaten 1 1/2 lengths. Favored A P Valentine gave way early on the second turn, was never better than 8th at the half, and finished a very disappointing 14th and last, beaten 22 3/4 lengths. The win was the second in a row for owner Frank Stronach, trainer Joe Orseno, and jockey Jerry Bailey. Also, the win pushed Jerry Bailey into a tie for the lead in Breeders' Cup wins, with Pat Day who was shut out.

Macho Uno (inside) managed to hold off the late charge of Point Given (far outside) by a nose despite an erratic trip down the stretch.

Orseno and Stronach lead Macho Uno to the winner's circle. His trainer Joe Orseno said: "He has a lot to learn and I am hopeful he'll have learned it by May. You didn't see the best Macho Uno today." The next day he added, "He's a stupid horse! The horse learns by doing, but he still has a long way to go. At Saratoga, he was a pure embarrassment. He came out of his stall and it was all over. It was like I taught him nothing. He tried to breed to everything he saw, and just acted badly. He loses focus." D. Wayne Lukas suggested "Geld him on April 15th and that'll take care of your problem!"

Macho Uno's owner Frank Stronach said: "It was a great thrill when Awesome Again won [the 1998 Classic]. This is a half-brother and he is Number One among the New York colts. He'll rest now and be sound and fresh next year. This is very special. Macho Uno. The main man."

Macho Uno in the post parade. His jockey Jerry Bailey said: "He kind of balked when we made the lead. He did that with me in Canada (at the Grey Breeders' Cup at Woodbine). I thought if I hit him left handed I'd get his attention, but it almost backfired on me. He ducked in and out. It would have been a shame to lose that photo. He was the best."

Second place finisher Point Given in the post parade. His jockey Gary Stevens said: "I really thought we were going to get there. Fifty yards out he just wasn't making up the necessary ground. I saw Bailey's horse do some funny things approaching the wire and I thought we could get him."

Third place finisher Street Cry in the post parade. His jockey David Flores said: "He made a great move. We hope to come back next year (Derby). We were right there, three or four lengths off the pace. I think he'll make a top three-year-old next year."

2.40-1 favorite A P Valentine who finished last in the post parade. His trainer Nick Zito said: "Unbelievable. I have no idea what happened. This is ridiculous. This business... I can't believe these horses can beat him." Jockey Jorge Chavez added, "At the quarter pole I thought we were going to blow by everybody. When I asked him, he had run out of gas."

The popular flaxen maned Flame Thrower heading to the paddock. His trainer Bob Baffert said of all three of his entrants, "We drew badly all the way around (Flame Thrower drew 12). What can you do?"
