Trainer Neil Drysdale got to work early saddling his 3-year old War Chant to a win in the Mile over a host of promising European invaders. Sent off at a lukewarm 7-2, he was outrun early but made up 5 lengths in the final furlong down the center of the course to win by a neck over longshot North East Bound. European invader Dansili was another nose back in third, completing a $14,007.80 tri.

Chalk players found relief in this event, with favorite Kona Gold rallying to win in track and Breeders' Cup record time. Second choice Caller One went to the front immediately and set a blistering pace but faltered inside the 1/16 pole fading to 4th. Honest Lady and Bet On Sunshine, who was also third in the 1997 Sprint, rallied past him him late but were no match for Kona Gold who stopped the clock in 1:07.77.

The highly regarded European filly Petrushka was sent off at 1.4-1 but simply failed to fire, finishing fifth. Frank Stronach's Perfect Sting won as the 5-1 second choice under Jerry Bailey, with Tout Charmant 3/4 length back in second and another 3/4 length to German filly Catella in third. Spanish Fern was pulled up at the start when her jockey heard a crack and she was vanned off for examination.

Owner Frank Stronach, trainer Joe Orseno, and jockey Jerry Bailey won their second Breeders' Cup race in a row when Macho Uno survived a difficult trip to win by a nose over Point Given. California based Godolphin entrant Street Cry was third while lukewarm favorite A P Valentine was last beaten almost 23 lengths. As he approached the finish, Macho Uno veered out then in again and did not appear to like the whip but still got the job done.

The Europeans finally ended their Churchill Downs losing streak with a win by Dubai Champion Stakes winner Kalanisi. Canadian longshot Quiet Resolve surged to the front mid-stretch but could not hold off Kalanisi. Nine-year-old campaigner John's Call held third through the stretch to complete the $5,871 trifecta. The 2000 Classic was supposed to be the coronation of much hyped Derby winner Fusaichi Pegasus, but in keeping with the longshot theme the 5-4 favorite failed to rally, finishing sixth. Tiznow's full brother Budroyale was second in this event last year, but this time the family would not be denied as he became the first ever California bred Breeders' Cup Champion. Tiznow dueled with Albert the Great for the first mile, then European hope Giant's Causeway drew even for the lead but could only hold second beaten a neck. Captain Steve passed the tiring Albert the Great for third.
